For the current (2010/2011) tax year, you are taxed at 18% of your taxable income – if you earn less than R140 000 per year. You can download SARS’s helpful “Budget Tax Pocket Guide” from this page if you want to know more:

Keep in mind that your taxable income is sometimes significantly less than your gross annual salary if you contribute to a medical aid, pension fund/RA, or certain charities (to name only a few expenses that are tax-deductibel).
