I’ve been looking in detail at budgeting from the point of view of the young salary earner. Pretend now that I am one of them. Many of us live too close to the edge, and often don’t leave enough credit in our salary account to cover stop orders and debit orders. (The total of these amounts is a fairly fixed figure from month to month.) This causes huge embarrassment, and even financial penalties… So – I need my bank to help me on this. Is there an account that will send a message to my cell phone or email address when my credit dips below say R2000? Or any number I choose? This will be SO helpful.

I have not checked the other South African banks, but I bank with Nedbank and know that they have the eNotes optionality:
http://nedbank.co.za/website/content/enotes/about.asp

Among other SMS notifications, they also let you know when your bank balance drops below an amount specified by you. Hope that helps!
